Dear Dirty Tbilisi

— Short film, 2016, Georgia
— Directed by Anna Dziapsh-ipa

I can’t imagine going through with this one more time,” - Guram Tsibakhashvili told me these words, when we were going through his huge archive of photos from the 1990s, arranged according to dates. Each photo describes either two or more different stories: one that is seen and or one that is felt, when one remembers the episodes from the nearest past. The Independence of Georgia started with demonstrations, raided rallies, civil war, criminal fights, ethnic conflicts, hunger and little electricity. However, independence gave rise to interesting processes in Art. Tsibakha was part of the process. He knew many artists, was friends with them, and constantly took photos of the decade. His camera was like an additional eye, which captured and saved every important movement. His archive is one of the most precious sources of information to remember and process the important events of the country, where history often was coloured by nationalistic shades.

When the earth seems to be light
როცა დედამიწა მსუბუქია

— Documentary, 2015, Georgia
— Directed by Tamuna Karumidze, Salome Machaidze, and David Meskhi

Young Georgian skaters, artists and musicians feel trapped between the powers of the church and the political world. They create their own open spaces beneath viaducts and at other “non-places” that lend themselves to romantic notions of a free existence. Questions are posed to them about God, love and freedom, but these boys would much rather just be skating – for many of them it has grown into an obsession. They may be unfazed by painful falls, but narrow-mindedness really gets to them.. They get no acknowledgement here, so they spend their evenings throwing Molotov cocktails at a concrete slope. Their tattoos are “a diary you can’t escape from. You tattoo what you feel; what’s important for you at that moment.” The portraits of the skaters are based on a series of photos by David Meskhi, one of the three co-directors. This impression of their daily lives is intercut with news footage of demonstrations in Georgia.
